COASTAL STEELHEAD
Location: Port Orford, Oregon
It’s not often that you can fish 3 different rivers in 3 different days on one fishing trip. The Southern Oregon Coast offers both larger and smaller rivers to accommodate every angler’s dream. If you are looking to get off the beaten path and fish in rural Southern Oregon, consider James and Kait Sampsel’s wonderful new program in Port Orford, Oregon. It is not a place that is stumbled upon but rather a destination for large elusive winter steelhead. The town is an “artsy town with a fishing problem” located 30 minutes north of Gold Beach and 30 minutes South of Bandon. This Airbnb destination has an Ocean and river view and is accompanied by head Chef Kali with locally sourced farm to table dining. This impressive area has a great array of attractive and productive swing fishing water. Guests will float different sections of the river in rafts and jet boats getting out to fish prime runs. At days end they will return to a down-home, family-style delivered dinner and simple ranch style Airbnb accommodations on a working cattle and cranberry bog farm ranch.
Trip Details:
Species: Winter steelhead
Season: January-March
Capacity: 4 anglers
Fishing Program:
Both Kait and James Sampsel are extremely skilled and personable guides with a great gift for working with anglers of all experience levels. Each morning, they will trailer their rafts and jet boats and pick you up at your Airbnb. They will fish the rivers that are in shape and near the area and spend the day floating between wade fishing spots. All fishing will be traditional down and across swing fishing, typically with spey rods, Skagit heads and sink tips. This is relatively big and intimate water both with structure and tide water character and the surrounding area and accompanying views are rather spectacular. While guests are hoping to connect with adult winter steelhead, one of the things that makes this trip special is that encounters with smaller ‘half-pounders’ and or Chinook Salmon are common and tend to keep the excitement levels high.
